Investigate jobs, skills involving my field

There are a lot of useful online resources that can help me to explore about my future careers with their essential skills. Seek, Indeed, and DeakinTALENT offer you a wide range of opportunities to apply for placements, interships, skill workshops or even voluntary work. Also, through such websites, I may find out what skills employers tend to require. By that way, I will understand more about myself and try my best to minimize the skill gap.

As my major in university will be Cybersecurity, THE SECURITY JOB PROFILE PROJECT provides me different vital skills, knowledge which can help me create a detail plan to achieve my career goals.

Apart from online information, having a consultation with my lecturers, Student Learning Advisors or Learning Mentors in university also absolutely help you gain the necessary experiences for my career plan.

Get used to university life

It may take me a couple of months to be accustomed to university routines. However, taking part in social activities or events in university is always a perfect chance for a freshman like me to widen my relationship network. Friends are people who may be by your side during university life, so if I am just open to everyone, making friends will not be hard as I thought anymore.

Do Self Awareness Assessment – Create LinkedIn profile

It is extremely important to identify my own strong/weak skills and expriences. Career Decision Making from resources of DeakinTALENT is a perfect means to guide me how to plan for my future career based on my interests, skills and career values.

In addition, Skills at a glance (SFIA Foundation) enables me to figure out which skills is required in different level of specific careers. Therefore, it is easier for me to narrow donw the range of skills I have to improve.

Apart from considering skills of applicants, a unique LinkedIn profile is what many employers are looking for. Therefore, it is never too early for me to create my own LinkedIn profile. It will contain all of my experiences, skills and certificates, degrees, which are essential when applying for a job.

Develop Social and Technical Skills

For Technical Skills: On the one hand, there are many online resources or materials that may offer me many courses about IT (freeCodeCamp, Udemy, Coursera, Lynda.com etc.). All of them are great and friednly website for every user. On the other hand, paying attention to the lectures and doing as many practical assignments as possible are the best ways for such a student. University may be not the place we can learn everything but it is the place where we are taught the most basic knowledge and skills.

For Social Skills: Joining in social clubs at school can be a good ideas. Also, attending voluntary work will give me the chance to communicate with different types of people, enlarge my relationships as well as explore new things. Eventually, those experiences will make my CV more attractive.

Learn about effectively writting cv and prepare my own cv

CV or Curriculum Vitae plays an important role as it shows how good we are at our fields (skills, degrees, work experiences, etc.). I want to make my own CV creative and effective in order to impress employers. I need to find out what available units, skill workshops or skill classes most suit my career plan by asking lecturers or friends for advice. Also, I will have to keep gaining experiences, enhancing my skills and widening my knowledge.
